History

It’s believed that goddess Saraswati was born to goddess Durga on the auspicious day of Basant Panchami celebrated as Saraswati Puja. Devotees who worship the goddess Saraswati on this day are blessed with knowledge and prosperity. People celebrate the occasion by keeping a fast. People perform Saraswati puja during Purvahna Kala, the time between sunrise and midday.

A mythology connection with Basant Panchami is about love, beauty, and attraction. Kamadev’s wife Rati worshipped for an onerous 40 days to bring back her husband who was turned to ashes by Lord Shiva. Kamadev was brought back to life on the same day of Basant Panchami by Lord Shiva. God of Love, Kamadev is worshipped with his wife Rati on Basant Panchami.

Basant Panchami is celebrated in different ways in different parts of the country. Since Basant Panchami is the day of arrival of happiness with the onset of the spring symbolising rebirth and renewal – with fields of yellow mustard charm touching all the hearts, yellow become auspicious. The eastern parts of India, Basant Panchami is celebrated as Saraswati Puja. The people dress up in yellow attires to celebrate worshipping the goddess for knowledge and prosperity. Basant Panchami is celebrated as the festival of Kites in Punjab. Jasmine Garland is part of the ritual in Rajasthan. Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati are worshipped with mango leaves and marigold flowers in Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Chattisgarh. It is celebrated as Sharad Navaratri in the South.
