The Roman Empire ruled by Emperor Claudius II Gothicus in the third century was very obstinate in recruiting soldiers in many wars. He was very stubborn in not giving the soldiers leave, believing that the family life shall make them a coward. All were angry with the Roman emperor. None stood against his tyranny. A Christian priest took a step to secretly send the soldiers from the war against the emperor’s orders.

Emperor Claudius found the discreet exit of his soldiers from the war and imprisoned Valentine to an ordered death sentence. He fell in love with a blind girl who was jailer’s daughter. On the eve of his execution, Valentine wrote a sonnet with ink squeezed from the violets. It is believed that his sonnet signed ‘Your Valentine’ made the blind woman see the world before his execution by Emperor Claudius.

Saint Valentine’s love for his beloved blind woman and his sacrifice is remembered globally after his name as Valentine’s Day. He gave his life for the young couples who were bonded in love forever. His sacrifice is remembered and he became the epitome of self-sacrifice for the love. He was granted sainthood by the Catholic Church and created the feast in his honour on February 14 by Pope Gelasius I in AD 496. English bard Geoffrey Chaucer, father of English Literature was the first to depict St. Valentine’s Day as the day for the celebration of romance in his poem ‘Parliament of Foules’ in 1375.

The day became associated with romantic love in the 14th and 15th centuries with lovebirds of early spring. 18th Century saw Valentine’s Day symbols used with a heart-shaped outline, dove, and a winged cupid. The naked cherub launching arrows of love is Cupid portrayed on Valentine’s card. Cupid is the Roman god of love having his Greek equivalent in Eros. Eros is a handsome immortal having golden arrows to incite love. He found his space in Valentine’s card from a mischievous child to a symbol of love.

Since being granted sainthood, 14th February is celebrated as Valentine’s Day to celebrate the love by exchanging gifts and cards. The couples in love go for a candlelight dinner, sharing thoughts of love in making the day beautiful to get edged in their memories.
